Walking 20 Minutes Per Day Improves Heart Health for At-Risk Groups

Taking a brisk 20-minute walk every day may significantly improve heart health for people who are at high risk of having cardiovascular issues, according to a recent scientific statement from the American Heart Association (AHA).

The statement identified several groups at higher than normal risk for heart disease or death from heart problems: older adults (age 65+), Black adults, people with disabilities, individuals with lower-level education or income, and those with mental health disorders like depression.

Engaging in regular physical activity remains one of the best ways to improve heart health, but the most at-risk groups for heart problems often face barriers to reaching the current recommendations for physical activity (150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week).

The study authors point out that even lower amounts of physical activity— like walking 20 minutes a day— can still provide significant benefits for heart health. They recommend that at-risk individuals commit to an exercise routine and also that urban and rural communities provide better options for easy-access exercise programs.

Contraceptive Pills Linked to Significantly Increased Depression Risk

Women who use or have used combined contraceptive pills may have as much as a 130% increased risk of depression, a new study has found. The risk is especially high during the first two years of use, coming in at 73% higher than normal.

Those who started taking combined contraceptive pills (i.e., pills with both progestin and estrogen) when they were teenagers were at the highest risk of developing depression— 130%— but the increased risk for adult users was still fairly high at 92%.

The study analyzed data collected from women about their contraceptive use, symptoms of depression, and any depression diagnoses. Researchers did find that depression risk appeared to decline after the first two years of contraceptive use with the exception of teenagers.

“Although contraception has many advantages for women,” said Therese Johansson, one of the lead researchers, “both medical practitioners and patients should be informed about the side-effects identified in this and previous research.”
